Deputy Mayor gives back to the needy students

The Deputy Mayor brought joyful smiles to many children from different schools as some of them received uniforms for the first time.

Cllr Vera Gumbi, Deputy Mayor of the City Of uMhlathuze, was accompanied by the Municipality officials and some of the leadership together with

the Speaker of the City on her school visit tour. Deputy Gumbi was thrilled by the children’s smiles, as well as the warm welcome by different schools and signs of appreciation shown by both teachers and children.

“I visited most schools last year and I was not happy with many things and it touched my heart so I made a promise to come back this year with some of the most basic needs I identified last year. I am very happy with the turnout of this campaign and promise to continue visiting more schools and assisting children” Deputy Mayor Gumbi said.

The  week long campaign which visited 6 schools around the City of uMhlathuze Municipality sponsoring disadvantaged children with over:

  • 70 shoes
  • 20 boxes of sanitary towels
  • 6 full uniforms

Cllr Gumbi was also accompanied by the outspoken Zizi Dladla, Community Services, who spoke to the school children about hygiene and cleanliness. Dladla is a nurse by profession, and is no stranger to assisting where health is concerned. Dladla gave pointers to the girls on how to be clean and how to love and respect their bodies when they have their periods.

Nokwethemba Dludla spoke to the children about child protection and child abuse on behalf of the Department of Education. Dludla works closely with schools and educates children about issues that they need to come clean about. Children are advised to report abuse. She spoke about 5 types of abuse:

  1. Physical Abuse
  2. Spiritual Abuse
  3. Sexual Abuse
  4. Neglect
  5. Child Labour

A grade 4 learner from Musi Primary School, Nonsikelelo Sikhosana, was very happy to receive her full uniform for the first time and thanked the Deputy Mayor for making her day so special.
