Government reveals solutions to end taxi violence in Maphumulo

The KwaZulu Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu, has given Maphumulo Taxi Association a final warning to shut down the rank should the security situation continue to deteriorate.

He said this while addressing the community of Maphumulo and KwaDukuza. This was due to incidents of violence that kept occurring in this rank. Mchunu announced that government had already issued the public notice declaring its intention to close the rank if this continues.

The cabinet also authorised the Department of Transport and Kwa Maphumulo Municipality to take control of the taxi rank and introduce the rank management system. Security will be deployed by the municipality and ranks will be fenced off with only one entry and exit gate.

Mchunu also urged all taxi drivers to work together in ending this violence and make peace with the KwaDukuza Taxi rank, as the ranks are supposed to be the safe environment for commuters. “The decisions I announced were approved by the cabinet and we will shut down the rank if it does not end,” said Mchunu.

“I am very happy with the decisions of the cabinet and I will support any decision taken by the government towards solving taxi violence and ensuring community safety,” said Bhoyi Zondi, chairperson of South African National Taxi Council.
